I admit that I am not much of a poetry reader, and that I only read this book because I am slightly acquainted with the author, having shared a former blog site where I admired her wit and intelligence. Yet I was utterly delighted by these poems of growing up and growing older, of womanhood and desire, of creative impulse and self-doubt. Each poem had a couple of turns of phrases that captivated me: looking at her body in the mirror and finding danger; dragging her worries behind her like “a stray whale that followed me home, swimming over concrete;” taking notes on life that are merely “fog-doodled messages on car windows.” I also like the poem about the erotic appeal of her sleeping husband’s elbow, and think “Marriage is a man who asks you to be louder” should be a part of every wedding vow. Highly recommended to anyone who appreciates wit and intelligence.Product details

I am not a person who typically likes poetry as I often find it pretentious. My friend recommended this book to me and I was truly shocked at how much I enjoyed it. The poems are moving, full of character, and the author's voice feels genuine, the words unforced. I am looking forward to future works by the author as she is a singular talent.
Caroline Hagood's poems in this volume strike that balance of playful and sombre -- touching on issues like sex, gender, femininity, relationships, selfhood and nostalgia -- which are all serious topics du jour. However, the writing elicits a inviting sing-song melody that is accessible even to those who don't read poetry. Hagood is a wordsmith, but not in order to showboat her intelligence nor grasp of language. She uses words in all their simplicity, and brings the reader into her world in the most gently seductive way. Highly recommend!
"I want to talk bowel movements/walk straight up to the next well-bred woman I see..." How often I have felt that way! Ms. Hagood's lines contain a weird truth of our civilization. Regardless of social or economic status, we tend toward self-deception on many levels, and love to put shiny veneer over walls full of mold. Ms. Hagood consistently THINKS and OBSERVES before she speaks, an inherent quality of being, which allows her poems to far surpass the effusions and out-right vanity of many contemporary poets.
Her poems are rare and beautiful gems like the poems of Emily Dickinson. We find concise clarity of expression and a wealth of well-formed ideas, which offer a comprehensive report on tenderness and responsibility, accuracy and illusion, and the vast perversion of language in the 21st century, where our limited vocabulary and instant digital delivery make worthwhile communication nearly impossible. She may compose poems on a laptop, but Ms. Hagood's ideas are hand-written, borne on her sensual tongue and lips, tactile, primal, personal, and above all, poetic.
Very thoughtful
This poet has a goofy, unorthodox view of the world which she exposes whether we like it or not. Her work can be raw and vulnerable, but it is always readable and full of the wonder of life. This is her first full-length title. Everyone who loves poetry should go out and buy one for themselves and one for their best friend.
Caroline Hagood is an emerging talent. Her work manages to be honest and vulnerable while staying measured with precise word choices and unique (sometimes harrowing) imagery. Taking on subjects from the mundane to the magical, each poem is startlingly effective and touching. Remember the name, this writer is bound to go far.

she has a beautiful way of looking at things. Her book made me
associate so many things, and I have a better understanding of
poetry because of it. I even got out an old textbook from my
son's school ("Introduction To the Poem," by Robert W. Boynton
and Maynard Mack - Hayden Book Co.) to learn more about
poetry. I like the way this young woman in a very modern way
has shared something personal without making it difficult,
without a lot of symbols and hidden meanings, to convey her
deep feelings. Subtle, but right out there. This is a brave book.
