Highly entertaining and very well researched book. Great treasure chest of tips and tricks.
A fun book that captures a historical look at food with recipes and cooking tips that were helpful. The cooking tips had a scientific basis that explained the reasoning behind the process. The trivia questions kept me engaged and entertained.
Holder shares his knowledge and enthusiasm about all things having to do with food trivia and facts. Along the way, we're enlightened about foods and tips to increase one's pleasure of same. This nifty little book really comes to life in the chapter called, "Things I Like" , a collection of recipes gathered from friends, family, and from the author's travels. It is in this chapter that on e is able to understand the special place foods hold in the heart and belly of Ian Alan Holder.
Received this book as a gift and finally sat down to read it. Can't believe I waited so long! I've cooked for many years and it's amazing how many things I didn't know about cooking! This is not a "cookbook" but a fast-read/reference packed with so many fantastic cooking tips, interesting facts (how many bubbles in a champagne bottle), food traditions around the world (you may not want to bring a wine bottle if in Portugal!) and historical background on foods we've eaten all our lives! Mr. Holder's favorite recipes are in this book as well and I'm sure they're the best you'll find anywhere! Can't wait to try them!
Dr. Holder's book is a fun read -- both in little bites and in a heaping plateful. I confess, I am not a "foodie" and I did not buy this book. (My wife is the foodie in the house and she bought the book.) Nevertheless, I get a kick out of staying one step ahead of her when it comes to arcane knowledge about the elaborate meals she prepares. In the past, I was limited in my ability to praise her creations "Oh, this is 'ricotta'? It's good." Now, thanks to a few minutes with FC1 and FC2, I can zing her with "Hmmm.. 'ricotta'? How long do you 're-cook' the left-over whey?" Thank you, Dr. Holder, for making it easier to keep up with the foodie in my life.
The Foodies’ Companion 2 is a wonderful sequel to FC#1. Chef Alan goes beyond recipes and continues his approach of providing the reader with a complete taste of food background and history on familiar foods, mixed with fun food trivia. Alan also shares more of his favorite recipes for you to try, along with some additional cooking tips that will help you in the preparation of your favorite dishes. I’m already reviewing tips again as I prepare for holiday parties. It’s a foodie book with heart, easy to read and has come out just in time to use as a holiday gift for your favorite foodie.
Like "The Foodies Companion I" this book continues on the first by being a cooking book and not just a cookbook. Full of ideas and just good cooking in general. Plus the author has shared some of his favorite recipes, some of which I've had the opportunity to sample. If you've purchased the first book, you'll definitely want to round the set out. Since neither of the books is indexed, a few sticky notes help to mark off favorites as any good cooking book would need. And like the first, it's hard to put down once you've started. Absolutely perfect Saturday afternoon reading.
I was pleased and excited to receive "The Foodies' Companion II" several weeks ago. I have Dr. Holder's first book and it is on my kitchen shelf of cookbooks and used frequently. It is not really a cookbook, of course, but I was delighted to see the recipes in the new book. Rather his books are delightful text books about food, facts, history and cooking tips. I read "#2" like a novel and enjoyed it tremendously.
I particularly like his scientific explanations about food which he explains easily as a microbiologist and professor. When I have a concern about how long to cook something, how long an egg is good, what can I use if I am missing an ingredient and so much more....I check my "Foodies' Companion".
I strongly recommend this new book to anyone who loves food .
