The Philippines is a tropical paradise that has proven to be a magnet for tourists and for those wishing to spend carefree days of retirement in a beautifully warm climate. For the majority of tourists their visit to the ‘Pearl of the Orient Sea’ is uneventful and they return with happy memories of a wonderful vacation, and perhaps an on-going romance with one of the wonderful individuals that inhabit the nation. There are however, as with anywhere on this planet, dangers lurking. The author does not write from a purely academic perspective. He lived in the Philippines for 2 wonderful years and still visits there frequently. Further, he lived on an island called Masbate, which is in the Bicol region, and is one of the most underdeveloped areas of the nation. As a Registered Nurse he had the opportunity to research and to study the health and safety issues of the Philippines and here he shares that knowledge, to those who may find it of use. As a tourist one must be alert and prepared to any dangers that may be present, and his aim is to increase awareness of some of the issues that have the potential for harm. In so doing the reader and tourist, along with their family, will be able to safely avoid or increase there chances and of safely managing specific dangers should they arise. The tourist should be aware that specific and potentially deadly illnesses and risks do exist within the Philippines and this book outlines precisely what they are. Stay safe and enjoy your journey.

While the book was filled with statistics that upheld the authors incites, I was hoping for more relevant information on local indigenous vermin. The diseases and illnesses common to the Phils are pretty well known to travelers and expats. What we can vaccinate against we do and we always avoid stray dogs as we would anywhere. The author does do her due diligence in verifying her facts and I appreciate the research invested in this book as well as her compassion for the people of the Philippines.Product details
