From hearing him talk, Tanzie has a better grasp on their operation than most new employees. However, Tanzie has not worked for 20 years. She was hired in the audit department as an entry year person until she proved herself. Although she clearly knew more about accounting and investigation than did Hal who interviewed her, she accepted the job. She was paired with Frank and Moe and was to do what they told her to do. Within a week, she was definitely bored with the jobs they had her do.
Then Frank put her on a project to audit the vendors. Seeing something fishy oh her preliminary pass, she ended up investigating closer only to discover two of the employees were embezzling. She brings this to Frank’s attention and he takes it on up the ladder but takes credit for it.
As the story continues, Tanzie takes many chances to discover whatever she can about Bishop Group and possible fraud. When a pipeline blows up in Houston killing one of her best friends, her husband and two sons, Tanzie starts investigating harder. Will she find something? How will she get this information to the authorities when she gets it illegally? What will happen to her?

Loved this fresh voice showing that intelligence, experience and a little guile carry the day. Phillips is a natural story-teller; observant and funny, with a keen understanding of corporate finance. This was a page-turner for me. The heroine is middle-aged, underestimated, and underemployed. When she discovers corporate malfeasance, Tanzie's skills and maturity are channeled to outing the offenders. They never saw it coming, but it is oh so satisfying for the reader.
This book is clever and hilarious. I loved the way the heroine goes from dumped wife to victorious warrior against corporate greed. I can't wait to read the next book.
Entertaining from beginning to end and packed with characters with whom we have all had to work. A great story about people, places and situations to which I could easily relate. Not the way the corporate world should work but the way it occasionally does. This really is ripped from the headlines as they say. The story is humorous. It reminds me of Carl Hiaasen with more relate-able characters. This will be your favorite book of the summer.
I really enjoyed this book. It is well written with an intriguing plot , (even though I didn't quite follow a few of the things the main character did until later in the story). The main character is likeable and multi layered. I'm definitely going to read more by this author.
Being from Tulsa & now living in Houston coupled with working in accounting in. Midstream gas company, I think the author got the culture of the two cities and the oil business right. It was fun to read about a mystery with a character who's an internal auditor. The reader also picks up some internal control tips along the way.
What a fun read. First off, the protagonist is a 50 something woman for a change A much neglected heroine!. She is smart and funny. If you like Sue Grafton or Janet Evanovich, you will love this. If you are not big fans of them, you still may really like this because it is a little more intelligent and realistic.
I found it hard to put it down. Who knew the life of a CPA auditor could educate and entertain us so well. I cannot wait for the next one.
I don't know when I have enjoyed a book so much. I am an avid mystery reader and a former high school and college English teacher and I can honestly say this author is one of the best of the best. Don't miss this read!
